Legionella prevention

Previous procedures for combating Legionnaires’ Disease

Conventional procedures for combating Legionnaires’ Disease demonstrate some serious disadvantages:

For example, thermal disinfection cannot be used with continual water consumption. The end courses located outside the warm water circulation cannot be treated. Other adverse features include enormous energy and water costs, together with the danger of burning in the high-heat phase.

Disinfection by UV radiation can only be regarded as an auxiliary measure, since in addition to the high requirement for water clarity, this only works selectively, and has no lasting effect. As a minimum measure, temporary disinfection with chemical products is always necessary.

When chlorine, the oldest disinfection agent in the history of water treatment, is used, toxic breakdown products such as halogens can sometimes be created caused by the breakdown of organic compounds, which themselves demonstrate harmful properties.

None of these procedures remove the biofilms on pipe and container walls which are responsible for re-infection of the system.
